Divergent Questions

Divergent Thinking is the ability to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions in an effort to find one that works. Mind mapping, brainstorming, using explosion charts or Thinker's Keys are all strategies that can help you to expand your thinking about a topic.
Divergent questions encourage you to stretch your thinking  beyond what you know to be true.  These are the sorts of questions innovators and scientists use when they are looking for new ideas or alternative solutions to problems. These questions are also sometimes called OPEN questions.

Some examples of divergent questions are:
  • What are some alternatives to this?
  • What is another way of looking at this?
  • How could this be done differently?
  • What are the possibilities?
  • What different strategies could be used to solve this problem?
  • What predictions might you make about the future of this?
